It took over fifteen years for Kubrick to construct the masterwork that is Artificial Intelligence. A.I. focuses on a very dark genre in science fiction such as discrimination, neglect, and the evil that can come from human beings. A.I is also a very philosophical film about love. This film introduces a new and unforeseen vision of the future where technology is the survival skill of society. The image of the future; global warming has drowned the world's coastlines, but the American economy has survived, thanks to its exploitation of mechas. Mechas are humanoid robots, which are made to perform usual and sometimes complex jobs. Some can be programmed to engage in sex or any form of entertainment. A.I is a filled with provocative ideas, spectacular images and greatness. The center of the movie was hatched from Brian Aldiss' 1969 short story, "Supertoys Last All Summer Long," about an advanced cybernetic pet that is abandoned in the woods.

In the opening of the film we are presented to Professor Hobby (William Hurt) who presides a meeting of a company that makes mechas.

A.I has to be one of the most engrossing science fiction film I have seen since A Clockwork Orange and 2001:Space Odyssey, both being Kubrick films. Kubrick's most ambitious work in progress project, A.I was given to Spielberg after his unfortunate death in 1999 at age 70. Stanley had been busy making film such as Full Metal Jacket; Eyes Wide Shut and never had time to concentrate on A.I. While watching the film I got a big impression on the darkness and disconsolate that I had when watching other Kubrick films. The film's main focus is on David, which is a synthetic robot boy (mecha) who wants to find his place in the world ruled by humans. Haley Joel Osment who once again gave another terrific performance superior to The Sixth Sense plays the character of David. This also marks the eagerly awaited return of Spielberg returning to science fiction. This film gives you a feeling that was fulfilled in E.T: The Extraterrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I would also like to add, while watching this film the course of thought of Mr. Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick put together such a great cinematic experience. A.I anchors in a way that even the notoriously demanding Kubrick would have admired.

What I thought About A.I...

By: Erik

Artificial Intelligence has to be one of the years best films I have seen yet. With a major disappointment in the movie Pearl Harbor, which I can happily say, it sucked, A.I. has been the all time movie for me. It is thrilling yet sad, I never really was a fan of Stanley Kubrick, Until this year, and out of the two movies I saw by him, I fell in love with his work, His brilliance in a Full Metal Jacket, and A.I. have mesmerized me. As much as I love his work, I find it to be a little strange, but a good strange. A.I is about a Robot, who is the first of his kind to be programmed to love, He is the first Child Robot. I would most definitely put it in my top ten movies to see this year. It is a must see.
